The Enormous Turnip
The Big Big Turnip
Grandpa planted a turnip. He watered it every day. Drip, drip, drip.
The turnip grew. And grew. And GREW.
It grew SO big. Bigger than Grandpa's boots. Bigger than Grandpa's chair. Bigger than GRANDPA.
"Time to pull it up!" said Grandpa.
He grabbed the turnip. He pulled. And pulled. And pulled.
But the turnip did not move.
"Grandma! Help me pull!"
Grandma came. Grandma held Grandpa. Grandpa held the turnip.
They pulled. And pulled. And pulled.
But the turnip did not move.
"Granddaughter! Help us pull!"
The little girl came. She held Grandma. Grandma held Grandpa. Grandpa held the turnip.
They pulled. And pulled. And pulled.
But the turnip did not move.
"Dog! Help us pull!"
The dog came. Woof! He held the girl. The girl held Grandma. Grandma held Grandpa. Grandpa held the turnip.
They pulled. And pulled. And pulled.
But the turnip did not move.
"Cat! Help us pull!"
The cat came. Meow! She held the dog. The dog held the girl. The girl held Grandma. Grandma held Grandpa. Grandpa held the turnip.
They pulled. And pulled. And pulled.
But the turnip did not move.
Then came the mouse. She was tiny. So tiny. The smallest one of all.
Squeak! She held the cat. The cat held the dog. The dog held the girl. The girl held Grandma. Grandma held Grandpa. Grandpa held the turnip.
They pulled. And pulled. And pulled.
And... POP!
Out came the turnip! It flew out of the ground and everyone fell down — bump, bump, bump, bump, bump, bump — in a big happy pile.
That night, Grandma made turnip soup. Everyone had a bowl. The dog had a bowl. The cat had a bowl. Even the little mouse had a tiny, tiny bowl.
And when all the bowls were empty... and all the tummies were full... they sat together by the fire... Grandpa and Grandma and the little girl and the dog and the cat and the tiny tiny mouse...
And the fire went crackle, crackle... and their eyes went blink... blink... blink...
And they all fell asleep. Together.
Shhhh.
